February is AMD & Low Vision Awareness Month

Did you know February is dedicated to raising awareness about Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and low vision? AMD is the leading cause of sight loss in the UK for people over 50.

There are two main types of AMD:

Dry AMD:
- Most common type (about 80% of cases).
- Causes gradual vision loss.
- Likely caused by a combination of genetics and environment.

Wet AMD:
- Less common, but often leads to more severe vision loss.
- Caused by abnormal blood vessels growing under the retina.
- These vessels leak fluid and blood, creating a blind spot in central vision.

In a nutshell:

- Dry AMD: Like a slow tyre leak, central vision gradually worsens.

- Wet AMD: Like a sudden tyre burst, central vision is rapidly and significantly impacted.

Early detection is crucial for both types of AMD. Regular eye exams are essential, especially for people over 50.
